There are two classic economic problems for which government is - TopicsExpress

There are two classic economic problems for which government is the customary solution - the free rider problem, and the tragedy of the commons. As an example of the free rider problem, mosquito abatement is the typical example cited - unless compelled to pay by taxes, no one would pay for mosquito abatement, despite deriving huge benefit for it. The tragedy of the commons example is usually some wildlife management issue, such as overfishing, where, without government oversight, individuals would, in aggregate, take more than can be sustained, despite the end result being negative-sum. I would like clear-headed libertarian/minarchist economists to cite non-government solutions to both of these problems.
