There is a story you are trying to tell. It looks upon you every night as you sleep and speaks to you in a language your mind cannot grasp. When you wake you forget but feel its presence, missing, perhaps somewhere calling through a wilderness far away. This place you are always trying to get to. Sometimes you ignore the story and step loudly and thoughtlessly braking sticks while wondering what you will eat for dinner or how you may afford to change the brakes on your car. But it comes tapping on your windshield, scuffs your rear view mirrors. The story is your driver, when you dream you are sitting in the passenger seat holding onto the dashboard wondering where you are being taken. But Im the navigator, cant we just pull off and talk about this? On the side of the road, you see the truth that you ride on the back of an Eagle, soaring over peaks and canyons and a great expanse of beauty. The wind in your eyes makes you squint. Who am I? How did I get here? From so high up, little makes sense, you are not used to seeing things like this. You are bewildered, sublime in sun-scarred patches of an old way to see such immensity. I think it is time to get back in the car, you tell the white shape who has been driving you all these years. Ravens flock around you laughing or cursing, the sun emerging from thin grey wash. A small cyclone of wind gathers in your palm and you turn to show the driver. May we take a picture, so we can remember? It is time to go, morning is coming. In the flood of memories and feelings, day breaks. It has been a long journey already, Montana, Ohio, New York. In a week well be in Canada. The cold seems stuck in your body, a slight headache slows your motor skills. You notice when you grapple for the door handle. This rest stop probably has free coffee. Something in you has shaken, demands part of your thoughts but you dont know which part or why. A couple of crows scour cracks in the pavement looking for something just out of reach. One seems to pause and you wonder if its staring at you. You have a feeling to ask it what the hell it wants from you. Just leave me alone. But of course, that is silly.
