There is an old esoteric adage which states. Starve the wolf and it will eat the child. To qualify, let me say the child is the higher part of ones being; lest ye become as little children.( the higher mental and emotional aspect )..., that part which is making effort to be in touch with the spiritual side of one. ( not speaking of over indulging here ) The wolf being the lower aspects of one; the Godless, anti social self seeking one. The mechanical, often malefactor would be, the one wishing to be in control of one. There may be a point where it becomes necessary to indulge some modest concession to the wolf, or the lower aspect of one when doing spiritual work to prevent an all out revolt which would set back ones work, harming ones progress. So having said that, it is good to periodically assess the internal barometer, consider the state and respond accordingly. An occasional night out, perhaps a movie, a day at the beach, or lake - something to ease the tension and give the efforts some well earned moment of non-harmful R&R, just to keep the internal wolf at bay....lean, yes, but not starved to distraction. After all the wolf is a life long companion in this journey thru life, is it not? Surely one would not wish the wolf to eat the child as all would be lost.
