There is an old prayer that I have no idea how it ends: “O Lord, as you know very well, here we are again. We are here to do one of the hardest things any mortal can do—-to give thanks and really mean it. First of all, there are those of us who don’t ever say thanks for anything because we figure that whatever we have we got it all by ourselves. Then there are those of us who do give thanks for things received, but you can catch something in our voice that asks, ‘And why didn’t I get it sooner?’ And there are those of us who also say thanks but imply, ‘Why didn’t I get more.’ . . .” That’s all I remember about the prayer. How does it end for you? I do remember how Jesus addresses our/my problem of ingratitude in Matthew 20:1-6: “Are you envious because I am generous?”
