There is often as I have seen of late in many of the comments I have read, an insensitivity, perhaps through desensitization, towards mental depression. Many will offer a quick verbal panacea for treatment with the connotation that it will resolve the problem. Depression is more complex than can be imagined and more difficult to resolve than one might suspect. I, like many others, caught in the comments of sympathy towards the death of Robin Williams, a general sprinkling of one or two words or sentences suggesting what could have been done to prevent or allay the tragic ending which he met. This is a more complex problem and less understood one than many would ever realize entirely. It is something that can permeate ones life to the core and be invisible in all but the most tangibly peripheral ways. It is a demon which is not easily, and sometimes never, dispelled. There is much we need to learn and understand and an impetus to do so before another life is lost to this ravaging demon which can and does take away many precious lives away from us.
