There isnt a great deal of good news to report this morning but I guess we have to be thankful that more bats didnt die in yesterdays heatwave. Temperatures in some colonies peaked at 43 degrees Celsius but as there are many variables that contribute to a colony collapse, the vast majority of camps were spared mass deaths. The bats were fanning, panting and coming down the trees en mass in an attempt to cool themselves and although many volunteers were all monitoring carefully, most colonies survived without intervention. However, some colonies in both Queensland and New South Wales were affected with Black mothers being the hardest hit. As a result, carers in both States are awaiting another influx of hundreds of orphaned babies some as young as two weeks old. Volunteers are heading out again today to retrieve orphans from the affected colonies and we should know in a couple of days the full extent of the heat event.
