The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), in partnership with 32environment/biodiversity organisations has embarked on a major skills development and jobcreation pilot programme, GroenSebenza, a Jobs Fund Partnership Project. GroenSebenzais aimed at developing priority skills in the biodiversity sector to create sustainable jobopportunities for 800 unemployed graduates and matriculants. The partnership is made upof organizations from all tiers of government, NGO’s and the private sector. The programmeis based on an “incubator model” giving 800 unemployed youth the opportunity to gainmeaningful workplace experience through a structured mentoring programme, together withskills development and training opportunities for a period of two-and-a-half (2½) years. The Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Mpumalanga, as oneof the partners in this programme is looking for a total of three (3) graduates and two (2)matriculants interested and or qualified in the following occupations to participate in theGroenSebenza Programme: 1. Environmental Manager three (3) posts for graduates (Nelspruit): Job Requirements:An appropriate three year tertiary qualification in NaturalScience/Environmental Management or equivalent qualification. Knowledge ofenvironmental legislation, environmental management systems and integratedenvironmental management will be an advantage. Good interpersonal skills andcomputer literacy are prerequisites. Duties:The successful candidates will, inter alia review Environmental ImpactAssessment applications, in terms of the appropriate legislation, draft authorizationrecommendations for the record of decisions; evaluate and comment onenvironmental mining programme reports for the Department of Minerals and Energyand maintain a register of all applications and authorizations, implementation ofappropriate pollution and waste management policies and action plans, includingindustrial, mining and hazardous waste; maintenance of a register for waste streams;monitoring of air quality within the district; investigation of public nuisance andpollution and waste complaints; consultation with relevant target groups such asmunicipalities, other organs of state and industry and stakeholders and performanceof all administrative and related functions. 2. Trainee Site Monitors (Foreman) two (2) posts for matriculants at ElukwatiniEnvironmental Centre and Graskop Environmental Centre. Job Requirements:A national matriculation certificate. Good interpersonal skills andcomputer literacy will be an advantage. Duties: The successful candidates will, inter alia be responsible for: Supervision of cleaning of centre buildings and dormitories, storerooms, ablutionfacilities, basic maintenance on buildings, structures and sewage system, regularupkeep of centre grounds, cleaning, oiling and proper storage of equipment after use,basic maintenance and service on equipment i.e. bush cutters, lawn mowers, checkcamping equipment before and after use and assist with loading and offloading ofequipment and stores. Requirements Applications from rural, distressed and peri-urban unemployed youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are invited for the above positions. For the Graduate placement: a national diploma or first B-degree. SA citizenship. A demonstrated and clearly articulated commitment to the environment.
