Theres been a lot of talk about Bill Cosby and the rape - TopicsExpress

Theres been a lot of talk about Bill Cosby and the rape allegations against him. Everyone had an opinion, and most seem to be on his side. Heres where I am on the subject: I have always been passionate about womens issues, especially where violence is concerned. When something like this comes up, where it involves a celebrity, I usually find myself wanting to side with the accusers, while at the same time wanting the truth, like everything else. I often find myself on the fence about the accused--in standby mode, if you will--especially if its someone I have great respect for as a person. Bill Cosby is one such person. That being said, Im not going to make an immediate judgment here. Im not going to automatically assume hes innocent because hes Bill Cosby (which is what a lot of people are doing, unfortunately), and dismiss his accusers as being lying, gold-digging whores. (Im definitely not going to do the latter! #stoptheslutshaming) At the same time, Im not completely taking the accusers side, either. Yes, I said not completely. Because the feminist in me wants to believe the accusers. Because rape culture does exist, and too many women (and men) have become unfortunate statistics of it, and I want to be sure that these ladies arent. I am a believer in a fair trial, as guaranteed by our Constitution. I believe in innocent until proven guilty. But for rape survivors it often ends up being the other way around. Yes, there are such things as false accusations, but the vast majority of rape accusations arent--by vast majority, I mean 92% to 98%. Thats not exaggerated, either: nsvrc.org/publications/articles/false-reports-moving-beyond-issue-successfully-investigate-and-prosecute-non-s In conclusion, I hope the truth comes to the surface and justice is served--no matter whoever is on the receiving end of it--and that we can go on with life without passing judgment on either party.
