Theres some things i miss a lot about london, like my lost friends, dirty late night kebabs, proper cider or a brittish summers afternoon and a real english breakfast but one thing that is completely missing in Myanmar is that underground dance community, clubbing and vibe, those who understand real house and techno, where it came from and what it represents. This is still a long, long way away! I mean I havent even met one myanmar person who listens to techno (most likely they think of techno as hardcore or similar etc) here and this is not their fault. Its mostly that they just havent had the chance yet to experience it in the same way we had in the UK. Also i think knowing the history of dance music and its pioneers etc plays a big part in then giving them the opportunity to appreciate variety. Every club in Myanmar plays ONLY 135bpm commercial dutch remixes and every club plays exactly the same as well so this plus the knowledge of the country being closed off for so long tells me that Myanmar fell victim to the Popularity syndrome as that is all that was available with the likes of MTV and other news papers showing celebrity headlines and famous pop band or singers, hence 80% of all music here is dance pop remixes with Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Will.I.Am take charge. Although I believe every broken community has the ability to catch up with the rest of the world, a little bit of music education and history and a lot more promoters doing quality events which intern actually educate people, can really go a long way in speeding up the process. There is small, very small communities popping up now but for the more EDM type genres. No one here seems to appreciate a bit of Cocoon, Suara, Get Physical, Cadenza, Viva or even anything by Toolroom or Spinning. The people here know how to party for sure, just not what to! I actually believe in variety and people having a choice but in Myanmar you just have NO variety and NO choice.. Heres to more promoters and the Myanmar people broadening their horizons. Have a good Sunday all.
