There’s a New Terror Threat Emerging in Western Sahara, and the World Isn’t Paying Attention Time (08/08/14) Liljas, Per Exiled members of the Sahrawi ethnic group, some of whom are former soldiers from the Western Sahara war or their children, could become part of a new wave of Islamic extremism in North Africa. About 100,000 people have been living in refugee camps after Morocco invaded Western Sahara when Spain left in 1975. The Sahrawis nurse hopes for their own state, known as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and currently recognized by 46 nations, although many experts believe that an independent state would not be viable. There are also concerns that an independent Western Sahara would be more of a base for terrorist operations than it is now. In 2012, several dozen Sahrawis were reported to have participated in militant Islamist advances in Mali, and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that fighting in Mali could contribute to radicalizing the Western Saharan refugee camps.
