“There’s no money in women and money.” In 1994 when I wanted to teach my first workshop for women, I was told this repeatedly by men older than me in the management of my firm. They all said that I should drop the idea. Other brokers teased me. In simple terms I was told, “There is no money in women and money.” I was told women were not investors and couldn’t make decisions...that they only invested in CD’s, weren’t interested, and certainly would not attend a class on the topic of women and money. Fortunately I didn’t listen to these naysayers and I pushed forward. All excited to launch my first seminar, I turned to a local newspaper to run my first ad (a big investment of $500 at the time). The ad guy (an older man) actually laughed at me over the phone and said, “Son—I don’t want to take your money. Running that ad is just flushing money down the toilet. There is no way you are going to teach a class on women and money and have any women there.” Well again, fortunately I didn’t listen. I invited my clients and my mom (of course), who then invited her friends—and as they say the rest is history. That first seminar taught in Lafayette, California would have over 150 women attend (225 RSVP’d—and the room couldn’t fit them all). Since then, we have taught this class throughout the U.S. and Canada in thousands of cities.
