These days Im a remarkably placid chap, most of the time. Its been a while since I threw a telephone at the wall. But sometimes a piece of journalism is just so stupid that I want to dismember it in public. The attached article by Ken Thompson in The Telegraph is a case in point. The articles title is Soil report shows we should all grow more of our own. Perhaps, but the article gives us no way of checking this assertion. It cites a paper in the Journal of Applied Ecology but doesnt name the authors and doesnt provide a reference. It goes on to quote recent research that allegedly shows that gardens and allotments produce yields of crops 4 - 11 times greater than conventional agriculture. Which recent research we are not told. If I were a farmer, Id be dead keen to read this amazing research and immediately turn my land over to allotments, if it were true. Thompson should be ashamed of a piece of journalism that is up there with Freddie Starr ate my hamster for all the evidence he cites in support of his position. This is all the sadder for the fact that his basic position may well be valid. telegraph.co.uk/gardening/howtogrow/10792603/Soil-report-shows-we-should-all-grow-more-of-our-own.html
