These maps tell a more informative story than the net immigration by state maps. One general trend that can be observed on both coasts is movement from cities on both coasts. Checking the demographics of that movement might be expected to show east coast retirees moving to the Carolinas and south (but not like their parents to Florida); and west coast retirees moving to less urban areas. The more detailed maps give an indication of the motivation for moves. What is missing again is the ages of the populations: e.g. are young people migrating to the cities or are retirees moving to retirement destinations?
