They Mastered the Tide but Drowned under Apartheid....one morning in 1965 and elderly Indian fisherman, Doorsamy Goondan, grandson of pioneer Seine-netter Muniswami was seen praying by the surf at Addington Beach next to a garlanded boat, DNA7. Onlookers said this man carefully undressed, laid all his clothes on the shore and rowed the boat, naked, beyond the breakers. Later the boat was recovered empty. His suicide was apparently motivated by severe depression experienced after his familys forced removal from their beautiful home in the middle class suburb of Fynnlands to Montford in the crowded town of Chatsworth 30 km from his beloved fishing grounds. He found himself to far away from the smell of the ocean he loved so much. Missing the fishing tides and unable to afford the high cost of travel to the fishing grounds allegedly drove Goondan to commit suicide. Death because of Apartheid. Will history repeat itself.........
