They Only Hire Guys Of all the experiences I have had at LAU, many were as I would describe as unbelievable. But here is one, we in Lebanese would say it just “ma bte2ta3.” It was on the day of Job Fair. I was touring around along with a friend. He, like me, was a student in Electrical Engineering. Going from one company to another: Business, design, education… At last, we found one for engineering. “Excuse me sir, do you hire electrical?” He seemed reluctant to answer, “Mm, for you?” He said it and gave me a questioning glance from the tips of my spiky hair to the bottom of my worn out converse. “Yes, and my colleague too!” “Well, we do not hire girls for jobs!” I gave him a warm smile, and sarcastically said a french “ Seurry??” The man seemed to take a moment to think it over, “Well, you know in the power plants… It is tough for girls.” “And you know we can handle the work anyway?” My friend got into the conversation, “ So can we apply for an internship for example?” The man paused for a second again, ”Do you know someone to get you in? Or you know what Just apply!” I glared at the man, “So you are telling me you only hire guys and with a “wasta”?” He paused “Well sir, I am afraid I am not interested in such a company.”
