They say Mumbai has the second largest collection of Art Deco - TopicsExpress

They say Mumbai has the second largest collection of Art Deco buildings after Miami. This is an oft repeated phrase though I really dont believe that anyone has quantified this assertion. The New India Assurance Building, a stones throw away from Flora fountain in Mumbai, is a magnificent example of this style. It catches your eye at road level when you see the sculpted bas reliefs carved deep into the sandstone. The sculptor Mr. Parsare has made the act of carving into the stone as easy as cutting into putty. The figures with their strong Indian and agrarian theme appear fresh as they did when they were finished in 1936. The two main ribs to the building facade also feature a pair of wonderfully detailed figures, but they look strangely Egyptian and exotic. This is a powerfully executed building and the lines are clean, spare and well defined. Stop and stare at this structure the next time you walk south towards the Gateway of India from the Flora Fountain circle.
