Thirty-five years ago on this date of May 21st, I received still my favorite birthday present, Lynn Waters. Thank you Bobby Smith. I remember, I organized a football game to lure all guys to my birthday party. You always have to have a plan. It worked! We picked teams and began playing “gentle” tackle football. It was a beautiful sunny day and between games we had cake and ice cream. Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to me. At that time you could still sing “Happy Birthday” without having to pay royalty fees. Anyway, I handed Lynn a plate with a piece of cake and he said he didn’t need any cake with a playful grin. This is typical of Lynn. I told him that he had to have at least a bite of my birthday cake because if everyone at the party did not take a bite of cake the birthday magic would not work and I would not get my birthday wish. I knew the minute I gave Lynn a bite of my birthday cake with yellow roses poking him in the lip with my white plastic fork because I couldn’t take my eyes of his, standing in my driveway that we were connected somehow, and had been from a time far before my years. I remember his smile and loving voice, even then, and his eyes; his beautiful green-gold eyes (on that day because his eyes seem to change color depending on his mood and what he wears) captured my heart and a deep part of my soul that he has never relinquished and never will. We were in love from that moment. And that was my birthday wish and he gave that same present simply and beautifully to me every year after that. In the last 34 years I have not gone with out a birthday wish from the one I love……
