This Day in History: 31 BC – In the final war of the Roman Republic, at the Battle of Actium - off the western coast of Greece, the forces of Octavian defeat troops under Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian may have won the war, and gotten a Month named after him, but Mark Antony got the girl. 1192 – The end of the Third Crusade. Sultan Saladin and King Richard the Lion-hearted sign a truce. Richard, of course, would return to England to preside over the wedding of Robin Hood and Maid Marion, and to deliver a much deserved a**-kicking to his brother, evil Prince John, whose tax policies in Richard’s absence were almost as bad as IRS under Barack Obama. 1792 – The September Massacres of the French Revolution take place in Paris. The mob murders three Roman Catholic bishops, more than two hundred lower ranking priests, and prisoners believed to be royalist sympathizers. A lesson that revolutions of the mob, regardless of how well founded in their origins, always lead to excess and injustices equal to or worse than the regime they displace. 1859 – Holy solar EMP Batman! A sun super storm wreaks havoc with electrical telegraph service. No one could get on Facebook or Twitter for three days! 1885 – Union thuggery and racism align for an ugly display in Rock Springs, Wyoming, as 150 white miners, who were struggling to unionize so they could strike for better wages and work conditions, attack their Chinese counterparts, killing 28, wounding 15, and forcing several hundred more out of town. 1944 - During WW II, George H W Bush ejects from a burning plane after being shot down over the Pacific. Say what you will about Bush 41, and I certainly have my own issues with his Presidency, he was (and is) in many ways a truly remarkable man, and his record of personal accomplishments dwarfs that of any White House occupant since (at least) Teddy Roosevelt. 1945 - V-J (Victory over Japan) Day, the formal surrender of Imperial Japan aboard the USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, and the official end of the Second World War. 1963 - CBS and NBC expand their nightly network news from 15 to 30 minutes in order to double the propaganda and bullsh*t.
