This Lad is from Liverpool and be good if some of you out there could help him out PAUL O’SHAUGHNESSY CAMP BASTION TO TITCHFIELD, HANTS – VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Chief Petty Officer Paul O’Shaughnessy (47) of Speke, Liverpool is currently serving in Afghanistan with 857 Naval Air Squadron. Despite working long hours in support of the International Security Assistance Force, he has decided to rise to the challenge and devote most of his spare time towards cycling the equivalent of the journey, by road, from Camp Bastion to his home in Titchfield, Hampshire. This will involve notching-up a staggering 7,500 km, and peddling at an average pace of 30 km an hour, much determination will be required if he is to reach his goal by the end of his four-month tour. Paul intends to complete this challenge by combining the distances cycled on one of the Camp’s exercise bikes, with that achieved on a mountain bike, which he uses to cycle around Camp Bastion’s 30 km perimeter. A keen cyclist, Paul is doing this in an effort to raise money for Bradbury Fields, a centre for the blind and partially-sighted in Liverpool. This charity is close to Paul’s heart, as his mother, Marie, lost her sight three years ago, due to macular degeneration and she now depends upon Bradbury Fields for essential support. Paul stated that “without the fund raising efforts of their staff and supporters, centres like Bradbury Fields would be unable continue their important work in our communities”. Paul joined the Royal Navy in 1982, and has well as a previous tour in Afghanistan, he has also served with the Royal Marines in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and Northern Iraq. An imagery analyst by trade, Paul’s current job involves exploiting the radar data collected by the Royal Navy’s Sea King Helicopters. Although Paul is originally from Liverpool, he now lives in Titchfield, Hampshire with his wife Elizabeth, their 4 cats and 9 bunny rabbits. He said, “I am enjoying this challenge, because as I clock-up the miles on the bike, I can easily imagine that I am actually getting closer to home”.
