This Sunday at 2pm join John Davis, Alice Pratt Brown Professor of Art at Smith College as he talks about American Art at Smith College: The Professional World of Mary Rogers Williams. Williams, the subject of one of the current exhibitions, anchored the Art Department at Smith College between 1888 and 1906, working under Tonalist painter Dwight Tryon and occasionally counseling Smith President L. Clark Seelye in his ground-breaking attempt to assemble a collection of contemporary American paintings. This talk explores Williams’s place within the Smith Art Department and pays particular attention to the early formation of the museum collection at Smith, a little-known episode of significant turn-of-the-century institutional patronage in American art history. $7 ($5 members) florencegriswoldmuseum.org/calendar/american-art-at-smith-college/
