This Sunday at Northlake: “A House with Two Masters” Speaker: Rev. David Bloom The middle-class is shrinking. Most of the benefits from the recent economic recovery have gone to the top 1%. Affordable housing is disappearing. Many people work, but don’t make a living wage. Is this a concern for the church? Jesus said, “You cannot serve two masters; you cannot serve both God and money.” How does the religious community respond to his words in a society that places such a high value on wealth and its accumulation, while turning its back on those who struggle to pay the rent and put food on their families’ tables? There is a movement, both locally and nationally, to increase the minimum wage and also talk about the need for a living wage. Will these remedies help working people and reduce poverty? What is the work of the church in response?
