This applies to all areas where ticks are known to exist. Put a collar on your dog and check your cats, as I know from experience how costly it can be if your pet gets a tick. There is no preventative treatment for cats. LOCAL vet is warning dog owners to check their pets for ticks after seeing an increase in the number of the potentially deadly parasites. Frenchs Forest Veterinary Surgey say the paralysis tick typically poses a threat to dogs and cats from October through to April. Local veterinarian Dr Claire Taylor said the ticks, which are normally dormant during the cooler months, have been making a regular appearance in 2013. "This is possibly due to the milder temperatures and the increased rainfall since the start of winter," Dr Taylor said. She said signs that a pet may have a tick included a wobbly or unsteady gait, vomiting, gagging, change in voice or difficulty breathing. Dr Taylor advised owners to remove the tick immediately and contact their local veterinarian for further advice, as symptoms could develop some time after a tick has been removed. She recommended thorough checks of pets on a regular basis as well as spot on preparations or tick collars to help prevent pets from picking up a tick.
