This article in this mornings NZ Herald should be ringing alarm bells. Internet MANA has been the only party promoting free tertiary education as a priority. Now we have the VC of Auckland University saying that fees should go up - a lot. I agree with NZUSA President, Daniel Haines who said increasing fees to try to plug a funding gap would have a horrific effect on debt and equity of access. I have no confidence at all in Steven Joyces assurances in this article. The fact is that we have a choice between an increasingly elitist (McCutcheon) and narrow (Joyce) vision of universities, and an inclusive and liberating vision. Whether fees go up 4% or 40% is not the core issue. It is whether our universities are viewed as a centre of learning and research and discovery, places of participation and challenge, incubators of democratic challenge and technical and social innovation. Free education inculcates social solidarity and celebrates inquiry and the desire for personal and community development. That is the vision that we will promote. And well challenge those who made it into Parliament to expand their horizons too.
