This article is dedicated to one particular individual (he knows who he is) who inspired me to personally attempt to reach higher than I ever dared to dream I would THE FUTURE OF AUDIO PRODUCTION No, actually. The future is definitely NOT here yet. Any sweeping statement as such (outside of the definition of progress away from long established process) accompanied by assumptions that currently developmental technology is too far away from practical plausability to be considered (in what is supposedly conclusive research based on current production), is convenient and evasive. Very encouragingly (and predictably) Dolby is tackling issues with their Atmosound which will present possibilities for removal and insertion of environmental sounds which can be altered by the listeners will by applying different surface reflections and rarefactions. This is of course nothing less than what CGI studios have been doing with 3D objects and environmental light refraction for years (Poser and Daz 3D for the more domestic accessibility). Whilst technology in these areas are fast advancing and perfected, there is still no progress made outside of strictly digital editing, and the apparence of the synthetic ( though largely overcome by Game of Thrones studios for example) is still an issue. Why? Because what is not being sufficiently or successfully tackled is the inclusion of human organic perception and cognitive response in the process that is experiencing sound. Whilst it is easier to be fooled with image, we do not see or hear reality around us through a movie screen or via studio monitors. As long as audio is not captured in the manner in which we hear it naturally, and is not relayed back in the same fashion - not yet possible through any combination of solely current and available technology (without avoiding commending Dolby for its vision and progressive steps) - we will never be able to perceive contrived live environments as we do organically. Whilst these advanced editing capabilities progress the availibility of this current pipe-dream, they are somewhat futile against their greatest possible capacity, and therefore we will always know progress today. Until the boat is rocked and comfortable and safe avenues are deserted, the future of audio production will NEVER arrive. Whilst you can lie to the human subconscious, there is one fib that it is never, ever going to believe - and that is what is fakely or digitally contrived to appear naturally perceived, is in fact natural. So long as this discrepancy is neatly swept under the carpet, all the panning and subconscious programming attempts will remain to be mere sonic enhancements and FX, as opposed to live organic sound and therefore will never be perceived or enjoyed as such. Perhaps money funding purely digital definition should be channeled into the speedier realization of developmental organic technology instead in order to cease averting the inevitable sonic snags in the reality that is: Sound is not heard, yet rather, it is perceived. Perhaps someday someone will listen. Perhaps that someone will be you today if you choose to watch this documentary. Gareth Ramsay 2014
