This brought tears to my eyes. Because of Andy, I know not to buy foods with Palm Tree Oil. It sounds innocent but it actually comes from the pulp of the Oil Palm Tree. It has led to deforestation in Brazil, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, entire forests were leveled to plant only Oil Palms. This monoculture leads to the destruction of orangutan habits. The Sumatran Orangutan is on the critically endangered list because of Oil Palm cultivation. Not only do we need to read labels, so we know what goes in to and on to our bodies, we need to read labels to make sure our food is not harming other creatures. You would be amazed by what contains Palm Oil. Just a short list: Skippy Peanut Butter, Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo, Dove Beauty Cream Bar, certain Ben and Jerry ice creams, crackers, and frozen pizza. There are products that have Palm Oil from sustainable sources. Look for the Green Palm or the RSPO labels on your food.
