This fellow Gabor Mate says a lot of good things about parenting and addiction, but somebody has to explain to him how economics works. This is the second video (of the two that Ive seen), where he bashes western capitalism. He says that the competition aspect, and the lack of focus on the exploration of truth and the self are destroying us personally and culturally. But capitalism is just the way that we produce things most efficiently, and those efficiencies actually give us more time to explore ourselves if we so choose, because otherwise we would all have to live on farms and work 900 hours a day just to subsist. I do believe that it is a sin to be too focused on consuming objects once you leave the workplace, thats why I go for 4 hour walks with my kid on my days off, instead of buying consumer goods online and watching tv. But I do enjoy the inexpensive high quality panini sandwiches and mocha frappaccinos for breakfast or lunch when I do spend my time that way. An addiction to consumerism is a lame lifestyle, but consumerism is consumerism it isnt capitalism. Capitalism is the way we produce things efficiently, consumerism is replacing emotional connections with connections to objects and being fulfilled by them. The laws of economics tell people that the 15th hour of work in a day and the 9th day of work in a week will not return the same amount of reward as 40 to 70 hours a week will. The return from the next hour wont be as great, and as it starts to produce more for you, and you have an abundance, you can decide to work fewer hours in a day, or fewer days per week. I personally am thinking about getting onto a 2 days on, 1 day off, then 3 days on, 1 day off schedule, because it allows me the time to regenerate regularly, and do nothing in a day but connect with my kid and/or wife. The point to me seems like it should be balance, and self exploration, not all or nothing, or one way or the other way. ill keep working on things forever, but as I make more money I will focus more on working on things for me, and not for customers.
