This from Micah White in Adbuster : « Islam is one the few remaining beleif systems that can claim to have once managed a vast portion of the world and led humanity to prosper. Historians tell us that life under Islamic rulers was no worse than under pagan or secular regimes and that it was in many ways superior. Since the fall of the Ottoman empire following World War I, Islam has struggled to fulfill its prophetic promise to be the universal belief system of humanity. Until very recently, it looked certain that the West would maintain the mantel of global leadership for a long time into the future. But with the escalating environmental catastrophe, the breakdown of geopolitical consensus and the slide into a fully multi-polar world, global power is up for grabs. There are already one billion Muslims and if the rest of the six billions of us were given a free choise between an altermodern Caliphate or the continuation of authoritarian Consumerism, Im not at all confident that Islam wouldnt win with a landslide on a Platform of funding universities, banning usury and repositionning humanity toward spirituality. One day, Ossama Bin Laden will be remembered above all not as the mastermind behind the most shocking act of terrorism since Pearl Harbor, but as the man who brought Islams post-colonial struggle into the Internet-age of meme warfare. Ruthless in its pursuit of establishing a Caliphate as a viable alternative to capitalist governance by toppling America and its autocratic allies in Libya, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere, the strength of Al Qaeda was in creating haunting visual memes that no human will ever forget. Some of those images were intended for the West : psychological warfare disseminated by our media. Of those the most well-known are the many images of the twin towers castrated. But Al Qaeda also produced meme intende to rally Muslims. And of these, one in particular---a black flag popularized by Osama Ben Laden---is now popping up in city after city across the Muslim World. The legacy of this black flag may prove far more lasting than the events of 2001. »
