This is a brilliant work of art which touches on one of the most important topics for me as a woman. Although our gender has come a long way, so much still impedes us from enjoying the same privileges as men, but I often feel that in our outer fight for liberation, the inner fight eludes us. Our greatest inner struggle as women is our growing obsession with plastic surgery, which few are willing to discuss openly and honestly. In the pursuit of a fleeting youth, every day, women resign themselves to the knife or various forms of toxic injections, turning themselves into waxlike sculptures in order to retain an image of beauty we believe is most desirable and erotic to men. But by propagating the very practices that have served to define the way we are perceived by men, we are playing the biggest part in cementing this role. As a woman in the public eye, I am well aware of this struggle and am not immune to the effects of seeing my youth fade every day. But when I see women I once admired and looked up to succumb to ideals of beauty designed for us by men, my heart truly breaks. Seeing their strength replaced by fear does little for my personal confidence and self-respect as a woman. Today we look back at practices such as foot binding and neck rings as being barbaric, but really, how less barbaric is plastic surgery? My great hope for my gender is that as we fight for our rightful place in society, we do not adopt the worst aspects of masculinity and that we are able to retain the grace and tenderness that we bring into this world as women.
