This is a devotional that I just had to share with EVERYONE> Reading 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. Reflection I am not allowed access to the internet, but a friend sends me these devotionals. I enjoy them very much. I am in prison – on death row. Since arriving here, God has brought many people into my life. A warden and chaplain who follow Christ each day. Many guards are truly amazing Christians. There are free-world volunteers who visit so often, bringing Christian fellowship and the promise of the Word. You may be surprised, but the Body of Christ is alive and well where I live. You may call it death row, and it truly is, but I am actually a brother-in-Christ on life row. I have found eternal life here through my savior, Jesus Christ. So I just want to tell you how blessed I am by people like you. People you call Christian public servants. The Christian public servants around me, those who work here and volunteer here, look less at the outward appearance and, like our Lord, look more on the heart. Without excusing my past, they look less at what I did or my rebellious ways. They look less at my shame. Like the Lord, they look more at me as to where I am and where I will someday be. Through His Word, and His people like you, my Lord has taught me to look on the heart of others. (You might think this is a lesson learned too late in my life, but still it is God’s lesson to be learned.) So I am thankful for those who come to work and volunteer here. It’s not an easy place to work or visit, I realize that. They have to be here because of me, and others like me, I know that. But they bless me each day. And I am blessed when I can bring our Lord to those around me, including a guard who may be having a terrible day or a free-world volunteer facing challenges of his own. You may not be thanked enough, but the world is blessed by people like you, truly blessed. You may not work in a prison or volunteer on death row, but there are people around you who are incarcerated in some way – incarcerated by outward appearances. Incarcerated by temptation or by Satan. Incarcerated by fear or by shame. Incarcerated by the consequences of their own bad choices or godless actions. Maybe it’s the person working next to you? I pray you will look at them less in terms of outward appearances and, like our Lord, look more on the heart. Prayer Father, in the name of Jesus, continue to mold our hearts like Yours so we can meet brothers and sisters right where they are at. Amen.
