This is a scan of the original art hanging on my wall. From Wolverine: Jungle Adventure, written by Walter Simonson, art by Mike Mignola. Personally, I call this Confinement/Release, because of how the art works to depict the actions. Top half: close ups of small actions. Partial figure. Heavy black borders emphasize the trapped feeling. The thinner verticals to mimic the cell bars. Bottom half, the pay off: camera pulls back to see the full figure. No border, the art bleeds right off the page. Lines radiate from the center: limbs, claws, the bottom structures at angles, the horizontal structures in mid panel, and the abstract effects above and to the sides of Ws shoulders. The words dont duplicate the actions depicted, but the art reflects the actions of the plot. The trapped tight frames move to freed & open as the character does the same. When I bought this from MM at a local convention in Paramus NJ in the early 90s, I mentioned the above to him. He said, ye-e-e-a-a-h, well, thats the kind of thing someone else says about the art. Im just drawing. (I suspect hed say differently now. Or maybe the breakdown was in the writing? One artist writing for another?) But to me, its the comics equivalent to the scene in Tom Hanks Castaway, when hes in the bathroom of the plane, hes looking at his fingernail, the camera closes in on the mirror image, closer, closer, boom! right to the explosion.
