This is a trick I learned from Jerry Saltz when he was my teacher at SVA. Its something all artists should do and it would be cool if you did it here below. He was trying to teach students how to write about their work. He accurately noted the typical confusion between looking at art, ours or others, in terms of subject matter instead of content. Content - for an artist - is your real material. So Saltz made his class create lists of content they work with.. For some, this could be three shorts words.. one word.. for me it is a never ending list. I collect content, add it to my list... it generates work in different mediums.. with different concerns: autobiography phenomenological ruptures reality versus fake open ended language narrative fragments fiction color class and material edges line daily life mundane common blur of media and reality the formats of mass media placement de-skill marks traces of thoughts clues margins of consumer culture mystery emotion and more.
