This is all about the algorithms. I can probably understand why Facebook continues to insist that I “finish” creating my profile but I find it is becoming irranoying (my word that’s a combination of irritating and annoying) when, down the right side of my screen, they continually ask, “John, where did you grow up.” Along with that they give me three or four choices where they expect me to click a circle to answer their intrusive question. It’s interesting though that by using their algorithms they take info from posts and interest, along with map tags and then try to guess. Right now the three choices are: Bradford, Pennsylvania, Denver, Colorado, and Sarasota, Florida. Well Facebook, here’s my answer; I don’t HAVE a hometown. I have MANY with none being Denver OR Sarasota. If I WERE to consider any place to be my hometown it would have to be Miami, Florida where I lived for 36 years, the longest of any place where I ever lived. So let me mess with your algorithms a little more and tell you this. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio but at the time my parents lived in a small farming community called Rockdale, Indiana which was just outside a town called Harrison, Ohio. So is my hometown Cincinnati, Rockdale or Harrison? Later my father joined the “Erie Conference” of the “Evangelical United Brethren Church” (which in 1968 at a General Conference held in Dallas, Texas merged with the Methodist Church to become the United Methodist Church). In joining the “Erie Conference” which had its main conference location in Findley Lake, New York the family moved to Northeast, Pennsylvania near Erie, Pennsylvania. Within a few years we moved to another farming community called Deckards Run, Pennsylvania but our mailing address was Rural Route 4, Cochranton, Pennsylvania. That was also close to Meadville, Pennsylvania. From there we moved to a village called Rixford, Pennsylvania where Dad was the pastor of two churches; one in Rixford and the other in another close by village called Duke Center, Pennsylvania. Both were in Otto Township and the Junior Senior High School between the two villages was merged with the neighboring Eldred, Pennsylvania Township of Eldred. From there we spent a short period of time in Cheektowaga, New York (Actually that’s not true but again, I’m messing with Facebook’s algorithms and besides; I love to say Cheektowaga). We actually moved from Rixford to Bradford where I lived for a grand total of three and a half years. Would that make Bradford my hometown? Rixford and Duke Center were very close to Bradford but in the surrounding areas there were other cities, towns, villages, and communities with names like Olean, Allegany, Salamanca, Limestone, Portville, Jamestown, Smithport, Port Allegany, Coudersport, Kane, Warren, Rew, Sawyer, Foster Brook, Derrick City, East Branch, West Branch, and Lewis Run to only name a few. Most of the names I remembered because there were young ladies living in these communities that I found interesting. But I digress. So Facebook, I could go on and on with where I lived between Bradford and Miami but it is becoming boring for me. That being the case, if you insist on knowing all sorts of trivial information about my life ALGORITHM THIS!! (BTW, if anyone reading this can think of cities, towns, villages, and communities I failed to mention, please reply with the name and state below. Facebook will love you for it).
