This is an American Culture problem -- we see, and teach leadership as if it is separate from efficacy. The story is that there is a division of labor between the thinkers and the doers -- that intellectual capital is more important than labor. This disease is destroying our culture at every level. You gain critical information by having your *hand on the tiller.* Doctors need to spend time with their patients, Boeing needs to build their parts at home, and leaders need to do less with their big brains, and more with their hands. There is no such thing as book-smart and street-stupid. Street smarts is the main knowledge -- that is where you need to be. If you can leverage that with a little bit of abstraction and a little bit of analysis than you will do better -- but a concept which only exists in the abstract has no value whatsoever.
