This is an email I received today from one of my former Soldiers. Brought me to tears. I never want to IMPRESS but I always want to IMPACT. Tony, How is everything going retiree? Glad to see you made it and your doing well. I just wanted to say Thank You for the mentorship when you were my first real squad leader. I have not received that type of mentorship since I was a private. To this date, when I am talking to Soldiers I take the approach of how SGT Gantt would handle it. As I was doing some research for my Platoon to study and hopefully mentor, I came across the 11 principles of leadership. I remember sitting in the office right before we got released and you would ask us to name them off. The first one would always be, build a team. Since then, I have always, consciously and subconsciously tried to do that. Without going into a long lengthy email. I just wanted to say Thanks. And for those times when it was rough just know I fell back on to what you taught me. I am proud to call you my Mentor and a friend. Take care and hopefully one day our families will cross paths again. In order to succeed, you must be willing to fail
