This is an interesting post for me as it brings back some memories of being attacked by rocks on a bus in Washington DC. However, the police response was not to fire rockets into another section of the city with the vague goal of discouraging the rock throwers. When I was a child, my family looked forward to attending a circus performance in Washington DC that was sponsored by the Metro Police Department Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). My uncle was a sergeant on Metro PD at the time (1969) and bought all of the kids in our family tickets to the circus. The FOP rented buses to transport the families to the circus venue and we were excited to be on the buses with a motorcycle escort in front & back of the 2 buses. I think we were on New York Avenue when the rocks started flying through the bus windows. One of my cousins face was fairly cut up from the shattered glass (she was sitting next to the window) and another of my cousins got a cut on her head when one of the rocks hit her head (no stitches required for either of them). The buses sped up, some police cars joined the entourage and after we arrived at the circus and LOTS of police officers arrived to check on the families. Granted it was scary but I just dont recall that anyone from Metro PD went out into the night with guns blaring in the neighborhood to avenge the attack on the bus. In fact, the rest of evening went fairly uneventfully and I think I fell asleep on the bus ride home. There were more police cars & motorcycles on the ride back to where our parents cars were parked. I simply cannot imagine a local police department, in the United States, being allowed to use mortars & rockets to teach the rock throwers a lesson. In fact, there would be investigations and prosecutions of the police departments that conducted this type of activity. So, why does the United States support a government that allows their police & military to conduct raids to retaliative raids on neighborhoods where the rock throwers may live? Rockets for rocks seems like an over reaction. That US tax dollars are used to buy the rockets is absolutely inexcusable.
