This is fur! Please consider signing. Thank you for being a compassionate consumer and citizen. Dear Minister Ritz, As a person concerned about animal welfare and the environment, I am writing you to ask that the Ministry of Agriculture and Agri-Food exercise its jurisdiction over both agricultural products and animal welfare in order to ban the practice of fur farming in Canada. Over three million animals are killed for their fur annually in Canada. Over two million of these animals are raised on fur farms. Animals raised on fur farms are subject to intensive farming practices that seriously compromise their welfare, including confinement in cramped wire cages that deprive them of the ability to satisfy their most basic behavioural and social needs. Mink, for example, are semi-aquatic animals who, when in the wild, spend up to 60 per cent of their time in the water, have a home range of 5 km2 and are extremely territorial. On fur farms, mink spend their entire lives in cages measuring 30.5 cm by 91.4 cm (1’ by 3’), never have the chance to swim, and live crammed in with hundreds – even thousands – of other animals. In order to collect their furs, animals raised on fur farms are put to death via gassing or anal electrocution. Unfortunately, in Canada, fur farming is not regulated and it is left to the industry to establish its own undemanding standards. Fur farming also raises a number of serious environmental concerns. Fur farming produces vast quantities of waste. Further, fur must be treated to counter the natural process of biodegradation, which requires the use of environmentally damaging chemicals such as chromium and formaldehyde. Given the seriousness of the concerns set out above, as well as the fact that fur is purely a fashion accessory and that synthetic materials have been shown to be as effective in protecting against extreme weather conditions, I urge your ministry to follow the lead of England, Scotland, and many other countries that have decided to ban fur farming.
