"This is not about a lack of funds. I hope people realize that. This is a six million dollar facility. This is only about mis-management and neglect and there is no excuse for. In Texas City, Texas animal advocates along with past and present shelter volunteers are still pleading with authorities to take action regarding the deplorable conditions at the shelter. Photographs taken by volunteers show just how filthy these conditions at the shelter are; as they show not only overcrowding in dirty cages, but show the animals in and with urine and feces in their cages, food, and water bowls. Some of the reports include animals eating feces and drinking urine in their cages. View slideshow: Horrific, filthy, and inhumane conditions at the Galveston Shelter According to KHOU, “The Galveston County Animal Resource Center in Texas City is now under the microscope of investigators for animal cruelty allegations.” While the shelter admitted putting down a large number of animals: hundreds in this last month alone, it still admits that overcrowding is still a major issue. The Shelter has experienced an enormous number of animal surrenders for months now. While reports say that after a visit from the Texas Department of State and Health Services, that the shelter was in compliance; however, that leaves many to wonder how that could possibly be true given all the photographs that have been made public. According to KHOU, “The Galveston County Health District, which runs the shelter, tells KHOU the facility took in 1,156 animals between June 3 and July 16 and euthanized 785 of them.” A shelter volunteer reported seeing a truckload of euthanized animals leaving the shelter on July 13th and she claims that while the shelter appears to be putting on a good front, that it is really just a smoke screen and that nothing is really being done to fix things. While the Galveston County Sheriffs Office is investigating allegations regarding the conditions at the shelter, they would not release any information at this time. Thanks to the shelter offering half price adoption fees and people donating money to help, more than 117 animals have been adopted from the shelter, but there are still tons more than need help. Volunteers are still trying to gain media attention to this problem and hopefully with it, many more rescues and adopters to help save these animals. Volunteers also run a Facebook page which you can see at the link here to help network these animals.
