This is one of the best articles about depression that I have read in a while and I wanted to point out some insights in it that I found extremely accurate, especially when dealing with my own case of depression. Depression has no rhyme or reason. IT JUST HAPPENS. People who suffer from depression of loose the ability to articulate why the feel or act the way they do, this is the depression taking hold of them. 1. Depression can come from nowhere and suddenly take hold of them. Depression cuts off your ability to have friends, it takes control of their lives to the point where it’s easier to feel nothing, even easier than it is to feel happiness. 2. When your depressed you feel a complete and utter inability to be yourself, and it makes it ten times harder when your around loved ones, i.e. the people who know the “real” you. Being with strangers becomes easier because you can put on a show for them that they can’t see through. This is why many depressed people seclude from the world because it is SO hard for them to be around their loved ones and know that they can tell that there is something wrong that no one can fix. 3. Excessive cheer is frustrating, it just reminds them that they aren’t full of that cheer themselves. They aren’t sad either but rather experiencing a complete lack of all emotions, and you can’t fix something that does not exsist. Don’t off your opinions or advice, just be there for them. 4. Coming out of depression can be a long, long, long climb and emotions can come back in strange ways and usually not all at once. Sometimes this means they have to learn how to deal with their emotions all over again. It can be like a game of shoots and ladders for them. They take three steps forward but then will fall right back two steps. Be patient, because even though it is very difficult for everyone they steal made one step.
