This is one of the smallest buildings I have ever conducted an investigation in; however, it was loaded to the brim with activity. I was fortunate enough to be allowed inside several times while writing our book on Fullerton ghosts. Edward and George Amerige, along with George Fullerton, are considered the prime movers behind creating the City of Fullerton. The Amerige Brothers invested in over 430 acres of prime land in what is now Fullerton after obtaining assurance from George Fullerton that the railroad would pass through their land after they offered free right-of-way to the Fullerton’s railroad interests. The railroad altered its course to include the proposed Amerige townsite, and Fullerton was born. On July 5, 1887, Edward Amerige drove a stake into a mustard field at what is now the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue, and the townsite was named after its benefactor, George Fullerton. The original house was constructed circa 1887 and is the oldest commercial building in Fullerton. The simple wood-frame building was initially built on the southwest corner of Spadra (Harbor Boulevard) and Commonwealth Avenue as a center of business for the Amerige Brothers. The building was subsequently moved to Commonwealth Park in 1920 and over its lifetime, has served numerous functions. It was once a residence, law office, milliner’s shop, barbershop and tool shed. During 1939, the Ebell Club sponsored a renovation project for this landmark property and ultimately moved the building to its present location in Amerige Park to honor the Amerige Brothers. During 1983, the building was again restored through private donations and volunteer concern and became its latest incarnation as a Senior Citizens facility. The current location lies with very haunted Amerige Park where a prior school was built and burned down. Numerous apparitions of children are sighted and phantom voices heard behind the current house where a baseball diamond exists.
