This is the house that George Washingtons grandson, who he raised as a son after the father died when he was 6 months, built on the 1100 acres that would become Arlington Cemetery. It had an incredible view overlooking the city of Washington. His daughter married Robert E. Lee when he was a rising star in the U.S. Army and Lee eventually inherited the property. When the South rebelled, the Union Army drove Lees family out of the house to establish it as high ground in Virginia overlooking the city of Washington D.C. and Lee chose to defend the South rather than go to war against his family and neighbors. This was the beginning of the US civil war. Amber and Lincoln, when I walked into that place, it had the exact same look, feel and smell as when we first moved into the Ely Road house. Remember finding the papers in the desk with the $300 receipt for the Keeps conscription waiver?
