This is the proclamation my daughter Sarah and I saw posted near the banks of the great river running through Paducah, Kentucky. It seems to bear some relation to what is happening today with the "coup" by the rebellious extreme right-wing members of the House of Reps, who have all conspired against, continue to sabotage, and even to willfully try to destroy our economy as well as our democracy, with the help of billionaires like the Koch Brothers and their ilk. Occupation of Paducah Sept 6, 1861 PROCLAMATION: I have come among you not as an enemy, but as your fellow citizen; not to maltreat or annoy you, but to enforce the rights of all loyal citizens. An enemy, in rebellion against our common government, has taken possession of and planted its guns on the soil of Kentucky, and has fired upon you. Columbus and Hickman are in its hands. He is moving upon your city. I am here to defend you against the enemy, to assist the authority and sovereignty of your government. I have nothing to do with opinions and deal only with armed rebellion and its aiders and abettors. You can pursue your usual avocations without fear. The strong arm of the government is here to protect its friends and punish its enemies.
