This is the sort of message that keeps me going: >>Prof. Francione, In late March of this year, after almost 44 years of eating meat, seafood, eggs and dairy on a daily basis, my wife and I decided to try going vegan. The immediate motivation was for health reasons. For the first week or so, I was not sure if wed be able to sustain the vegan lifestyle long term. To help motivate us, we decided to educate ourselves more about veganism, including the environmental and ethical aspects. In the end, it was neither the health nor the environmental benefits that made us realize that wed always be vegan. It was the ethical argument. Specifically, your arguments as outlined on your website and in Eat Like You Care. Although I had previously seen videos of how horribly animals are treated at factory farms and in slaughterhouses, that hadnt been enough to make me stop eating meat. I had been tricked into buying free-range, cage-free, happy meat type products, and without having you crystallize the idea that all animal exploitation is wrong, we might well have fallen back into that if we had run into difficulty in our transition to veganism. As it happened, the transition was unbelievably easy. We did it all at once, and other than some minor issues in the first week or two (mostly related to figuring out how to build meals without animal products), weve been loving it. Our diet is now far more varied, healthy and delicious than it was before. We both have more energy, and have lost a significant amount of excess weight (and dropped several waist sizes). Weve significantly reduced our carbon footprint. But even without those benefits, we would remain vegans because its the right thing to do. With sincere thanks, [name withheld]
