This is the uncomfortable truth about Nigeria: The men who fought - TopicsExpress

This is the uncomfortable truth about Nigeria: The men who fought for Nigerias freedom emerged from different ethnic groups but they spoke in one voice throughout their struggle for independence. I spent some time to analyze the speeches delivered by Tafawa Balewa, Obafemi Awolowo and Nnamdi Azikiwe and they all spoke in one voice. This was a time Nigeria was emerging from colonial rule with all the ethnic problems inherited from the colonial government. Yet the intellectual elites of the time saw the need to speak in one voice in defense of Nigeria, not Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa or Niger Delta. Today, hunger has replaced common sense. My own friends who should be showing the way are rather hijacking ballot boxes in the villages, an indication that we are still far from the needed political civilization. Its pathetic that in the twenty first we still cannot coordinate a credible election at the local government level. Something must be wrong somewhere. Finding the missing link is a great challenge confronting our generation. We will continue to get it wrong until we find the missing link between yesterday and today.
