This just happened to my daughter this morning. Today was Picture Day at her Middle School. She woke up extra early to straighten her hair, put on make-up and dress in a nice outfit. She was wearing a black LONG sleeve (very classy) shirt - front view was up to her neck with JUST the top portion of the long sleeves showing about 10% of her shoulders - the top also had an under tank attached to it. I received a call from the school claiming that she broke Dress Code and if no one could bring her a new shirt right away - she would be forced to wear a Bright Orange T-shirt that read : I BROKE DRESS CODE and she was also told that she would have no choice but to wear this t-shirt in her 8th Grade school photo today. I immediately left work and returned to the school as quickly as I could. I demanded to speak to the Assistant Principal and asked her: How do the students who wear their pants down to their knees and the shorts that show half of their buttocks not considered Breaking The Dress Code Rules ? There was no reply! I was told that there is a new dress code that is not in full effect yet but shortly the kids will be placed in Internal Suspension when ready. I feel my daughter, who is on the A-Honor Roll every year, was targeted and embarrassed by her piers and school staff ! As I waited in the front office, I watched other students walk by with very inappropriate outfits on. I raise my daughter with respect and she chooses not to wear the clothes that many kids wear these days. I intend to call the Broward County School Board Superintendent about this matter. If Dress Code is such a problem in all the schools -- theres a solution… SCHOOL UNIFORMS !!
