This kid is so desperate to learn. I remember feeling exactly the same way in high school...was a repeat of junior high was a repeat of grade school...etc, etc. How very sad. Packets. We offer packet educations. Everything is compressed down into a copier packet. We dont invest education dollars to purchase books anymore. Fast food education. Learning on the run. Dont past go. I became disillusioned, too. Suspended the last week of school and not allowed to graduate with my class as punishment for speaking out about being pushed aside. For not following the plan, not conforming. How many kids who graduate today from high school are ready for life in general? Are they as prepared? I was expected to be ready for anything at the age of 18. There was always an a,ternative...the military service, if you didnt feel ready...they would take care of tearing you down and building you back up. Make you a killing machine. Send you to Vietnam or where ever; we are always at war; somewhere. This young mans intelligence was insulted and rejected by a teacher who probably doesnt care any more, who wont take the time and has no respect for this young mans opinion. As a substitute teacher, Ive seen and lived this scenario so many times its silly. I tossed the packet lessons for the day and embraced kids and taught the something they could actually use and take away for a lifetime. Substitute teachers. Had a field day with them. It meant a day off if you came into class and sub was there. I publicly apologize for being a complete dick to every sub I encountered, one of the toughest jobs in the world. Id teach a lesson they were too embarrassed to ask about (or smug, in some cases) like how to balance a checkbook, how do credit cards really work, what is the real cost of owning a car, how much does it cost to live on your own, how do you approach and complete an effective essay question (because in a year or two, you sure as hell are going to have to answer a ton of them in college) and how to proofread and self-edit what you write for punctuation and clarity. Wow. Just wow. Respect and love to that boy.
