This marvelous postcard was photographed in 1923. Pictured is the top of Stonefield Road, looking from the cross at Stonefield Crescent / Broompark Road, Northwards down Stonefield Road itself. Danskin’s drapery shop is on the corner of Broompark Road / Stonefield Road and next to it, the small buildings also still there today. However, heading down the street, things then change massively. The large three storey tenements are now gone and replaced by a modern row of shops. Look how quiet the street is. The people in those tenement homes didn’t have a nice view out on to the street. For whilst this looks charming and peaceful in the photo, immediately out the picture on the left was Larkfield Colliery, making the whole area at the time feel dark, dirty and industrial. Aside from the tenements things look strangely familiar today, as can be seen and compared to by this modern photo in exactly the same perspective taken in May 2014, by my friend Alex Rochead.
