This may be an interesting strength comparison for those of you who do general resistance training - just for fun today I decided to find out what my bench press 1 rep max. is - I havent done bench press properly for many months. I managed 100kg fairly comfortably but 102.5kg was slightly out of reach. It wasnt right from my chest but I needed to put the stoppers in because I had no spotters and I didnt want to die :P I often get asked if I do weight training and if I think it is a good supplement to gymnastics training. I would say on balance it probably is, in moderation. If I had open access to a gymnastics facility, I probably wouldnt do very much. But given that I dont, it is the next best thing to bodyweight conditioning. The vast majority of weights work I do is very specific to the strength skills I am currently working up to, the only generic weights work I do on a regular basis is weighted squats and heel raises for leg/tumbling power. It is important to not get too big and heavy as gymnastics is all about strength to weight ratio; but weight training is a very good way to isolate specific areas which you need to work on, as well as giving easily trackable, numerical progression. It is also a great way to vary your training whilst also staying productive, as doing the same things over and over can affect your motivation.
