This morning myself, my wife, and my boys participated in the Meadowlands Basket Brigade, sponsored by the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce. We helped assemble 300 Thanksgiving baskets (turkey, pie, cranberry sauce, stuffing, rice, veggies and more - the whole shebang!)for needy families in the area. Afterwards, I took my 12 year old with me to deliver some of the baskets and my wife went on a delivery run with the 17 year old. At the first house we delivered to, the woman we who answered the door said that it must be a mistake (the families do not know the baskets are coming) and called her husband to the door. As I explained who we were and why we were there, I could see the wife in the background close to tears. A few baskets later, my GPS took me down a street that didnt really look like a street. I looked up and, lo and behold, I was in a trailer park. 10 minutes from where we live and I had no clue that we had a trailer park so close. This particular park was devastated by Hurricane Sandy and most of the residents have still not recovered. Not only a great experience for my son, to see how other people live right in our backyard, but also for me, as I had never been in a trailer park before. When we left the park, our next stop was at a very nice home in a nice neighborhood, with a BMW parked in front. As we left my son says dad, those people dont look like theyre struggling. This gave me the opportunity to explain to him that many people are one step (illness, job layoff, etc.) away from struggling, What a Day! #meadowlandsbasketbrigade #givingback #lifelessons
