This past week we completed installation of our new WeatherBug Lightning Detection System designed by Earth Networks. Our previous system was outdated and no longer able to provide our membership with the proper safety alerts while on the golf course with the threat of lightning. The WeatherBug Lightning Detection system is the standard in reliability for in-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning detection – well beyond existing networks and single-node “prediction” systems. Detection of IC is critical for advanced warning of severe weather and deadly CG lightning strikes that often follow 5 to 30 minutes after IC flashes begin. Advanced warning increases our time to get members/guests to a safe location and ensure the safety of our staff. In the event of in-cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning detection within a 10 mile radius of Fox Hill Country Club a single horn burst lasting for 15 seconds will be audible on the entire golf course. Once alerted all golfers are required to immediately leave the golf course and seek shelter. A live-feed LCD Weather Display has been installed in the Pro Shop. The Weather Display will receive live, point-specific weather information to improve club operations, safety, and response. This web-based weather intelligence platform brings the highest level of precision to the tracking and analysis of weather. If, after 30 minutes, no in-cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning has been detected the system will prompt the all clear alert. The all clear will be a series of three horn bursts, each lasting 5 seconds, that will prompt golfers to resume play. Play will only be permitted to resume after the WeatherBug Lightning Detection system has signaled the all-clear.
