This post applies to all the people who are complaining about the ice bucket challenge being a waste of resources. I think I have figured out a reasonable compromise that will allow all parties to be happy. Ive already made my annual contribution to the ALS charity. In the past, Ive asked others to donate but unfortunately few people do. Whether the ice bucket challenge is a silly viral trend or not, the fact is that donations have skyrocketed because of it. True, many people who are participating still have no idea what ALS is. It is also true that many of them are not donating after taking the challenge. However, many others are. Those extra dollars translate in real help and funding for research that transforms lives. Sure, perhaps this video series hasnt been effective in raising awareness but theres no doubt its been effective at raising actual money to fight this devastating illness. ALS.org states that theyve received 11million in donations this week vs 1million during this same period of time last year. That makes this challenge a resounding success. As for the wasting water, even in our daily lives, mundane tasks such as leaving the shower running to allow the water to heat up. Most of us arent so environmentally conscious that we take cold showers everyday . That being said, I do understand the point being made regarding the water waste. Which is why I promise to take at least two cold showers to make up for the water Ill be using for the challenge. Hopefully Ive covered all the angles.
